Where can technology help

Loss of independence during ageing
Loss of independence during ageing

Whether we like it or not, the reality is that as we grow older, we gradually lose some of our independence and increasingly rely on others. Some individuals may be fortunate enough to remain independent longer than others, but eventually, their luck will run out too.Consider a hypothetical person, whom we’ll call Mary. As illustrated in the graph below, Mary has kept most of her independence into her early seventies. However, in recent years, her loss of independence has accelerated, likely making her more reliant on family and loved ones. Without intervention, she might become fully dependent before turning 80. Should this happen, Mary would need either expensive 24/7 home care or to move to an assisted living or long-term care facility. Assuming Mary and her family want to avoid this outcome, what can they do?

This is where technology and innovation can significantly contribute! With the right technologies, Mary's independence can greatly improve, allowing her to remain happy, healthy, and safe at home. Technologies can empower individuals like Mary to stay at home, but the challenge lies in selecting, using, and maintaining these technologies effectively. If implemented correctly, Mary's new path could look like this:

By selecting the appropriate technology for Mary and her family, she experienced an immediate 25% boost in her independence, granting her another five years before reconsidering a move. The good news is that this isn't a one-time intervention. By continuously assessing Mary's situation, new and more suitable technologies can be applied to keep her independent. If executed properly, Mary stands a good chance of living longer, enjoying a better quality of life, and staying at home as long as she desires, all while easing the burden on her family and at a lower cost.

Don’t underestimate what technology can do for you or your loved ones. Give it a try and see the results for yourself.
